Facebook Privacy Spaghetti

This article on the NY Times illustrates the issue with Facebook’s privacy settings:

To manage your privacy on Facebook, you will need to navigate through 50 settings with more than 170 options. Facebook says it wants to offer precise controls for sharing on the Internet.

I have done a little user interface design in the past and read a lot about it, and Facebook’s privacy settings are a train wreck, there are way too many settings, what they do is not always very clear, and sometimes they don’t do what you expect them to. It feels like obfuscation to me and that does not engender trust.
