iPhone in Belize

So I was in Belize last week, on a boat doing some diving. Not the best place to be because of hurricane Dean.

I had my iPhone with me and was able to communicate with people just fine, ATT seems to have some sort of peering arrangement with Belize Telecom, but there are some gotchas:

SMS works normally, I was able to send and receive text messages, in fact you can also send text messages to phones in other countries, you just need to have the full phone number in your address book, 011 to get international, the country code, 44 for UK for example, followed by the phone number.

For telephone calls, you need to add the 1 prefix before the area code.

Finally EDGE does not work, period.

I have found all this to be valid for Grand Cayman as well.
