Alexa’s usefulness

Filed under: General — François Schiettecatte @ 7:39 am

TechChrunch has some interesting figures out of Alexa, apparently YouTube is bigger than Google which is, of course, complete bunk. The article goes on to say that Comscore and Compete provide a much more realistic picture.

I have always doubted Alexa’s scores for two reasons: one we don’t know what the sampling size is, and two we don’t know who is being sampled. So it is impossible to derive any meaningful conclusion based on the Alexa score.

Which does not stop people form trying and I have gotten into some interesting discussions on why people seem to think they are important.

The last discussion I had with VCs on the subject was interesting because I was told that while Alexa rankings were not believed, they were nonetheless important and an important part of the valuation of a company.
